Rescheduled!

Well, I got a call yesterday late in the afternoon from Children's Hospital. They rescheduled Simon's appointment for next Tuesday March 6th. Grrr. I guess the good part about that is they don't see this as an emergency situation that has to be dealt with immediately. I hate waiting.

I am going to take my unplanned day and meet Misty at Costco. We are out of some of our staples. I gotta tell ya though, the kids weren't happy that they had to go to school today. Stella and Greg were going to do something fun with Hannah today. She was quite mad about her canceled day of fun. Can't blame her. I don't think she realized how unfair it was to Simon that he would have gone off to the doctor while she sat in a movie theater. Don't worry, Simon was gonna get some one on one time with them too. Hannah sees Simon missing school in a different light. Silly girl. I'd much rather he was at school with his boring teacher than getting MRI's and such. I know Hannah likes school so I need to figure out a way to help her understand that Simon isn't getting fun special treatment. That this is serious and keeping her on a normal schedule is important.... do you think she'd really get that? No. She'd hear the words and say, "But, MOM!"

That sucks you have to wait even longer!

The tough part with Hannah is that she would find all the medical stuff interesting so she would actually enjoy going with you. So dragging her along once would only make her want to go every time.

And since Simon doesn't act sick, I'm sure that it makes it harder for her to understand why he gets to miss school even though he feels fine.

Once you know more about what this is all going to mean to Simon, you'll be able to figure out how to explain it to her more. Maybe you can find some websites to show her or take her with you a couple of times so she does get to see the cool medical machines (even though it may be harder on your nerves).

She might find it interesting to see the MRI films or what the MRI machine is.

I thought that Stella & Greg were leaving yesterday. How long are they planning on being there? She told Ben one of them had a dr's appointment on Wed they had to get back for.

I don't think there is a way to make a sibling understand that missing school in this case is not fun.

After all, siblinghood, by it's very nature, requires a certain amount of distrust and teasing. I am sure Hannah is secretly suspicious that Simon is fine and just found a way to get out of school.

I remember applying such nrefarious motives to my brother whenever he got to stay home and I didn't.

As time goes on, your focus will invariably shift to Simon, particularly if he has to undergo surgery, and Hannah may feel left out. It seems to me that you might consider involving Hannah on the edges of some of the medical stuff so she understands what's happening and doesn't feel left out. You don't want to make her mini-doctor, of course, but if it seems like a team effort, maybe she won't be so jealous.

Hey,
I just stumbled upon your blog today via Amy. It has been way too long since we have talked. I did not know all of this was going on with Simon. I am so sorry and you are all in my thoughts. Seth is soooo big and adorable and yes he looks just like Hannah. I have your blog saved as a fave so I will try to pop in whenever I am avoiding homework. Miss you lots!
